Remembering Rana

It’s been over two years since Rana passed away. I’ve been an avid participant in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Last year I dedicated my fundraising in Rana’s memory. It made such a big impact, I feel Urban Desi Radio can be used as a platform to bring awareness to suicide prevention within the South Asian community. The goal is to raise 1,000 dollars. Please pass on this blog to all your friends and family. To make a donate CLICK HERE.

The American Nightmare…

Screen Shot 2012-02-27 at 8.23.09 PM

I was shocked to see this appear on my FB timeline. It’s a painful that we don’t have health care in this country, we have sick care. The dark side of this care is the bill the patient gets stuck with aka an uninsured American. This bill is for just being in the hospital for 5 days. I got a chest infection in the UK, was kept there eight days and they sent me off with an extra dose of my asthma medicine. How much did I have to pay? Nothing. While I was bored to tears by the fifth day; I couldn’t help but be grateful I wasn’t going to get stuck with an astronomical bill like this one. The taxes in the UK are outrageous, but at least I know I will be taken care if I got sick. The NHS (UK Healthcare) is far from perfect — however —I would rather be treated under NHS than here in America.

Petz is a dual US and UK citizen, she’s currently going through Nandos withdrawls (pita and hummus platters) — please send your nandos cards to urbandesiradio[@] so she can raid Nandos the next time she’s in the UK.

Gone To Soon – RIP Jashan

As a journalist, people turn to us to explains the complicated things in laymen terms, for me I can never grasp the loss of a child, especially if they pass on before their parents. I never knew Jashan,  but my connection was one of the Junction listeners Goldy, called on my show to tell me his cousin was ill and in the hospital. You can ask any radio personality, we are nothing without our listeners and for those who don’t appreciate the listeners, don’t belong in the radio business. As this year is coming to an end, I look back and reflect on my 10 years in the media scene, I realize I always try to go the extra mile for those families who love ones are missing for example. I know the value of media/social media, which has a dark side, but can be use for the good of humanity. This is the UDR tribute to Jashan, a boy “Gone too soon”

RIP Jashan

Welcome to Mela 2.0

Last night, there was a special private party for VIP costumers of Mela Tandoori Oven, their original location once situated underground in the Tenderloin district has gotten a major upgrade! The new Mela Tandoori Kitchen is located in the San Francisco’s Civic Center area, local business folks and city politicians are excited about Mela’s grand opening (happening later in the coming week) because their only other choice for Indian/Pakistani food is Naan n Curry. The Naan n Curry in the Civic Center area was mention in the 50 WORST PLACES to eat in the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.

Mela has two floors, the first floor is the dining area and upstairs is the “Hookahs n Hose” lounge, where you can indulge in a wide variety of different hookah flavors. The charcoal is actually organic; made with coconut shells.

The restaurant is own and operated by Subedar Brothers (Sohel, Moiz and Zoaib)  they are following in their fathers footsteps who opened the first Indian/Pakistani restaurant in the Tenderloin in 1986, “Shalimar Gardens” after their father retired, the Brothers re-branded it to “Mela Tandoori Kitchen” which evolved into a after hour hookah lounge.

Congrats to the Subedar Brothers and Family!!
