Picture 24

North America’s greatest South Asian DJ, Jay Dabhi is set to present a tasteful night of Bollywood and Bhangra Music, House Edition on June 16th at 8 p.m. at the one and only, Conga Room in LA Live.

Dabhi was introduced to his first set of turntables at the age of 12, he impressed his sister’s friends with his ability to mix and match the tempos of different records at such a young age.

“I was so excited to use the turntables,” recalls Jay, “that I would cut school to take a train and two buses to my friend’s house where I could practice mixing.”

This turn table expert merged out of the New York circuit in the early 1990’s and has proved to be one of the most recognized South Asian club DJs in North America. After spinning in Canada, South Africa and the UK, Dabhi is steps foot in L.A. to give the L.A. night life something to dance about.

Dabhi will grace the stage as the main act alongside L.A.’s very own South Asian DJs, Sandeep Kumar and DJ Nitro who have been spinning in the South Asian music scene for over a decade. With Nitesh D. and Rinku Show as hosts, this night is ought to be one of the hottest South Asian parties this summer.

Dhabi will be mixing Bollywood and Bhangra music at the Conga Room but, it doesn’t stop there. Specializing in house music, he will place his own twist and flavor into his mixes and provide a rather diverse style of turntablism by mashing up Bollywood, Bhangra and house music all night.

“We’re excited to have Jay Dabhi back in LA” said Rahul Khanna, one of the elite South Asian party promoters at Conga Room, “he has a keen connection to this city after he won ‘South Asian DJ of the Year’ from the South Asian Student Alliance (SASA) held in LA ,in the early 2000s.”

Bringing the crowd together is what Dabhi does best and as soon as his hands touch the turntables, the crowd at Conga Room is expected to go wild on a night where 400 party goers are expected to show.

Letter from Sonia Rai

AADP tweeted us that Sonia Rai (CureSonia.org) wrote a letter on her fan page, if you haven’t become a fan, please do! There’s LOTS of bone marrow drives going on for Sonia right now, keep checking it out and become a bone marrow donor.

Firstly I want to thank each and everyone who has been so supportive during this difficult time for me. The love and support that everyone has given me has truly made me speechless, and given me the strength to fight this!

I also want to thank everyone for the hard work that everyone is putting in to find me a match! I sincerely thank each and everyone of you.

Now id be lying if I said I wasn’t scared, however I am keeping a positive attitude because I know I can beat this!

I’ve been getting excellent care at MGH and my nurses are really nice. I’ve been trying to keep myself busy so that I don’t go crazy in this hospital room! Its hard though since you have to deal with chemo’s side effects and, well, no immune system. So sometimes you have good days and bad days. On my good days I watch movies and shows (thanks bhaiya for the ipad!), read, talk to the nurses and my parents and brother. I try to reach out to all the family and friends that have showered me with so much love and support.

Well dearest family and friends, I just wanted to give you all an update regarding how things are going.

Again I want to thank everyone for your love and support and hard work being put in the Cure Sonia Campaign!

Lots of Love,

RIP Jayaben Desai

Picture 14

“We Are Those Lions”

Jayaben Desai, who protested for the factory workers in North London Grunwick film processing factory, passed away at age 77. She led a two year strike in the mid 70s, a Gujarat-Born, who lived immigrated from England from Tanzania felt the need to stand up to the poor treatment and wages. The little fireball, who was slightly under 5 feet tall, fired these haunting words to her manager, Malcom Aiden. What you are running here is not a factory, it is a zoo. But in a zoo there are many types of animals. Some are monkeys dance on your finger-tips, others are lions who can bite your head off. We are those lions, Mr. Manager.

A majority of the factory workers were Desi immigrants from East Africa. While the two year protest didn’t get the factory workers jobs back or changed the working environment. Desai’s efforts paved the road for equal rights in United Kingdom’s workforce.
