#DelhiGangRape revisited

It was only a matter of time before the rapists would get a chance to voice their opinions on mainstream TV.

An interview with Mukesh Singh, the driver of the bus, where Jyoti Singh and her friend got on – will air 8th March on BBC 4 at 10pm.

The documentary “India’s Daughter” took two years to make.

Singh maintains his innocence, but strong DNA evidence has proven he raped Jyoti.

This article by the Telegraph highlighted some of Mukesh’s quotes. It made it’s rounds on my FB newsfeed, the first time I read it – I had to read it twice… to make sure I was reading his quotes correctly.

“A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy,”

“When being raped, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they’d have dropped her off after ‘doing her’, and only hit the boy.”

“You can’t clap with one hand – it takes two hands,” he says in the interview. “A decent girl won’t roam around at 9 o’clock at night. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy. Boy and girl are not equal. Housework and housekeeping is for girls, not roaming in discos and bars at night doing wrong things, wearing wrong clothes. About 20 per cent of girls are good.”

Singh faces the death penalty, but I’m sure if he was let off – someone would kill him for his no remorse quotes.

“The death penalty will make things even more dangerous for girls,” he says. “Before, they would rape and say, ‘Leave her, she won’t tell anyone.’ Now when they rape, especially the criminal types, they will just kill the girl. Death.”

His words were so hard for me to digest and left me feeling so disgusted. But this mentality is not just isolated in India, but all over the world.
