Trance & House Bollywood Remixes – A Bollywood song is released. Whether it’s about Munni’s Jawani. Or about Sheila being badnaam’ed. Or about a Jawani being Halkat. Whatever it may be… you’ll have a house/techno/trance REMIXED version of it before you can  quickly say

This is probably one of the most beautiful tributes we’ve come across in memory of the Late Jagjit Singh, the King of Ghazals. Sonia’s voice magically takes us back to the famous 1982 tour Jagjit and Chitra did. It’s almost like Sonia’s voice is being guided by Jagjit’s spirit – a very heartfelt and simple melody – with that 2012 touch to amp up the beat. Charkha Mera Rangla will be out on iTunes April 9th, just in time for Vaisakhi! This Punjabi Folk Smash-Hit was produced by sound extraordinaire Phat Kat!

15. Panjabi Architect

From: Los Angeles

Picture-26

Although he’s not an architect by profession, he sure can build towering music tracks. Panjabi Architect has the ability to “engineer” eerie and soulful beats together which makes for a relaxing listen. Our favorite track is “Bol Fakira Bol” which incorporates Gurdas Mann’s powerful words. “I think imagination to conceive and create is “architecture” and each beat should be carefully placed, chopped, blended and synchronized to perfection” he says. Well guess what Mr. Architect? You’ve done an amazing job with living up to your name!

14. Baagi

From: Los Angeles

avatars-000002542876-2kc8u1-crop

Baagi is a rapper who can express himself freely in Punjabi. His music and lyrics have an important purpose, in fact, he has touched upon farmer suicides, droughts in India and even the 1984 massacre in Punjab. Baagi is not afraid to rap with intention to spread further awareness about these issues. Our favorite Baagi track includes “Pagaari Sahmbal” which is dedicated to “the bushy bearded, bald headed and everyone in between” says Baagi!

13. Bol Punjab De

From: The Bay Area

UARbanner

Bol Punjab De started off as simple party DJs in 1998 and morphed into quite talented music producers. With hundreds of performances under their belt, at venues across the nation and worldwide, they have rocked dance floors with smooth mixing and great MC skills. Their hit single “Gera Like a G6” took the Bhangra music industry by storm when they gave “Like a G6” originally sung by Far East Movement a Bhangra makeover.  Their name says it all and they definitely define the sounds of Punjab (with a little urban flair, when necessary!).

12. Doc Bladez

From: Los Angeles

Bladez has been one of the earliest South Asian adaptors of Turtablism, which even won him awards in the 90’s! If you’ve been lucky enough to see this guy in action, you probably understand what other “tricks” he has up his sleeve. He is one of the few DJs that can rock a party with body tricks while playing mixes of Hip-Hop, Punjabi, and his recent favorite – Dubstep, and Drum n Bass. He has the ability to fuse classic Punjabi folk music and give it a new generation kick-in-the-ass! Check out his 30 minute non-stop mix of of “Desi Dubstep Journey” which we can’t get enough of!

11. Shar S.

From: Central Valley

Shar-S

Not only can he sing, rap and produce music but he can direct, shoot and edit video flawlessly!  Shar S is a musician and visual artist all in one and pours his creativity out into all his media. If there’s one music producer to put California on the map, it’s Hargo Boparai! His recent album titled “Bhangrafornia” really gave the world a flavor what a talented music producer from the Golden state can really do. With collaborations with Master Salim, Surinder Shinda, Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti and more, Hargo has genuinely showcased true Punjabi roots through his music. Check out his recent music video “Tere Vargi”  shot all over Northern Cali!

Formally known as Jagmeet Singh, Hoodini is a simple kid living outside the city of Angeles, but his talent is far from simple. Hoodini is the epitome of California hip-hop with a voice that flows flawlessly. “King”, his partner in crime, adds the perfect amount of indie flavor with his guitar skills when they perform live together. Watch them in action in our favorite track “Breakfast

8. Kanwar Gill

From: Los Angeles

kanwar

He’s the famous “Son of a Sardar” and original pioneer of Punjabi rap. Kanwar started his music career with the hip-hop Desi group Karmacy back in the 90’s and has been releasing powerful Punjabi rap lyrics ever since. Kanwar has the ability to rap in Punjabi and English in the same song! The way his words flow, never fail to give us chills down our spine! Just last year, Kanwar teamed up with singer Ladla Punjabi and produced a heart-warming track called “Teer” that really touched the lives of many Sikhs around the world, take a listen!

7. Haji Springer

From: The Bay Area

Haji Springer

This guy is like the Mac Dre of the South Asian hip-hop world! With his unique (and at times) explicit lyrics, Haji doesn’t fail to impress with his overall gaudy music and rapping style. He went from a solo gig to a music group called 3 AM and produced the hit single “Bass Hits Hard” which was a chart topper in mainstream American radio stations all over the nation! He’s definitely the poster child of South Asian hip-hop from the Bay Area.

6. Sammy Chand

From: Los Angeles

He really understood the need to produce and manage legit South Asian talent in California and made it happen!  Sammy is a true pioneer when it comes to putting an official stamp on South Asian music. He’s signed plenty of artists along the way and still had time to produce various types of music for his own label. Let’s thank Mr. Sammy Chand for paving the way for California South Asian music artists!

Social consciousness and cultural awareness act as pillars for Sethi’s music and lyrics which surely inspires a complete generation. Sethi enjoys traveling the world, stimulating others consciously while while sowing the seeds of true hip-hop. He has earned the number 1 spot on our list because of his influence to the South Asian hip-hop movement in the Western countries and in most of South Asia.

We were sad to learn about Sonia’s passing. We didn’t know her personally but we got to connect with folks here in the Bay Area to help promote bone marrow drive and fundraisers. Cure Sonia has been converted into a non-profit to honor her beautiful soul. We can’t stress how easy it is to become a marrow donor. It all starts with a simple cotton swab inside your mouth… no blood. no needles.

Please visit AADP to learn more about becoming a bone marrow donor. For our UK listeners, please check the Anthony Nolan Trust.

From Sonia’s Family via Cure Sonia Fan Page

Dear Friends & Family,

Thank you for all your love and support. In honor of Sonia and to carry on her legacy, we have formally incorporated Cure Sonia into a nonprofit organization. We are humbly requesting that rather than sending flowers, please make a donation to Cure Sonia. Thinking about becoming Vegan? Tips from S-Endz

14Mar

POSTED BY

s-endz

I tease S-Endz and call him my “Vegan Guru” (seriously he is) I’m still not convinced I can go completely vegan, however I’m attempting to adapt some vegan principals after juicing for 60 days. To me he’s the ultimate definition of coolness. Thanks for giving us a little dose of your vegan knowledge. 😉 (and giving me a lesson on vegan cheese over twitter heh)

Petz: I know you were a vegetarian for three years before the vegan transition. Think back to your pre-vegetarian days and now being vegan – how has your health improved?

S-Endz: My health has vastly improved since I became vegan. I have more energy, more stamina, my BMI is ideal, I’m more focused… But most impressively, I haven’t caught a single cold since I became vegan, even when I’ve been around multiple friends and family who have been sick. Dairy consumption leads to increased mucous production in the body, which is obviously to be avoided. I would suggest that everyone reading this goes and reads Dr. Robert Kradjian’s “Milk Letter” and/or watch the documentary “Forks Over Knives” to understand what dairy consumption is really doing to your body. It’s truly horrifying.

Petz: When you’re not in the studio, what sort of dishes does S-Endz like to whip up in the kitchen?

S-Endz: I like Indian food, of course. I learned from my Masi how to make a few things. I make a pretty awesome yellow dal, and aloo palak. I like making stir fries with tofu too, and I make great vegan Mexican food – bean burritos with lots of fresh veggies, jalapenos, guacamole and soy cheese :-)

Petz: Since you have had the best of both worlds, is it easier for you to be vegan in UK or US? What are the differences and similarities?

S-Endz: It’s definitely easier in the US because you can get a lot of great vegan specific products at even your average Wal Mart or Safeway, and you have places like Whole Foods. In the UK, it’s harder unless you live in London. But generally speaking, being vegan is easy, and much easier than I had thought it would be. In fact, if anyone reading this tries to go vegan even just for a few weeks, I’m confident they’d be surprised at just how easy it is.

Petz: Do you think you could beat Gordan Ramsay in a vegan cook off?

S-Endz: Honestly, I’ve never watched a single show of Gordon Ramsay so I have no idea whether he’d be able to make good vegan food. Given that he’s a chef by profession, I’d certainly hope so. But cooking for yourself is a different thing to cooking for others so I couldn’t say. I know how to make things I like to eat and that’s good enough for me!

Petz: Hey listeners, I personally think S-Endz can take on Ramsay! 😉

The Number One April Fools Gag for 2012

Everyone loves a cookie!

We stumbled on this site illfortune.net that sells fortune cookies for the brave. Are you brave enough to try one? They look legit… but beware. The fortunes are humorous and twisted. The ANTI-fortune cookie company, iLLFortune,  was founded by David Fenton.

The fortune cookie tradition began in San Francisco around 1900, and today the fortune cookie industry creates 3 billion of these sweet treats each year. Now iLLfortune has turned the concept upside down. One of the company’s mottos is, “Prank Friend, prank enemy.” No one is safe.

Urban Desi Radio got a sample box and some of our fortunes read….

Prozac is planning a long term relationship with you

The voices in your head think you’re an idiot

Diapers will be a part of your daily regimen and you won’t be the one changing them (our favorite!)

Imagine bringing home Chinese take out, replace the restaurants cookies with iLL Fortune’s cookies – you are guaranteed  to get PRICELESS reactions. The whole “scratch and sniff” app is so 2011. Prank on Pranksters!

March 4th the talented Northern duo, Metz and Trix made history knocking off Will.I.Am, J.LO and Mick Jagger to claim the number one on the UK Urban Music Charts. They also are number one on UDR Top 5 workout tracks. One of Petz favorite tunes to sweat out to. We’ve been receiving numerous inquiries about the track after Miss Banga played it on the UDR Podcast.

Metz n Trix collaborated with pioneering DJ/Producer Surinder Rattan, who added his magic touch to the track.

You’ll be able to purchase the track on iTunes at the end of March.
