Do you have dreams of becoming a dholi?

My first UK paycheck, I knew what I want – A DHOL! I quickly rushed to Jas Music in Southall, I proudly went up to the clerk and said I want a dhol. He gave me a good price, threw in a free bag and I was on my way. I picked up a flyer and went to a community center for classes. It was a disaster, needless to say, I can’t play the dhol. In fact the teacher made me go to the back and practice a simple composition. I also got it – but failed. To add insult to injury, I was the only woman in the class and some of the blokes mumbled “moti gori” (fat white girl) under their breath. That hurt. I could of snapped back “benchod” but I have more class than that. I never went back. I lost about 75 quid. I still have my dhol, it proudly hangs in my room. I feel like a poser, but maybe I will pick it up again. The problem is there’s NO dhol classes here in the Bay Area.

Recently Dhol Lessons Online has come up with an interesting concept. For 50 quid a year (79 dollars a year) you get unlimited access to their tutorial videos and access to their member area. That’s cheaper than most private dhol lessons. You can learn from the comfort of your own home and the customer service is fabulous. If you are shy in front of people or have no sense of rhythm like me – this is a steal of a deal!

Rock n Dhol folks.

Petz is a wannabe dholi who has no rhythm, but she can whip up chana masala with her eyes closed. That has to count for something right?
