Whitney Houston: A triple threat talent…

I’m still in shell-shock over Whitney Houston’s death, I saw the breaking news story come up on my fb timeline. I googled it and all the articles confirmed the worst – Whitney Houston, Dead at 48.  Growing up in the 80s, there were two stars I always looked forward to seeing on the TV and they were Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Their songs were truly iconic during that tremulous decade. Whitney had this caliber talent to carry a tune, to the point where most of us would of gone breathless – she could still harmoniously sync to the beat.

I’ll remember Whitney as a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act. As I mention on my facebook, if you are remotely BLESSED with one of those talents it can take you far – but if you have all three – there’s NO LIMITS to your potential. However the demons Whitney faced, like so many of our talented superstars were drugs. She coined the term on the 2002 Diane Sawyer interview “crack is whack” that open a can of worms for comedians to poke fun at her. Right now there’s silence, no one is laughing – all we hear is her amazing vocals coming out of our speakers, TVs, computers and smart phones.

People are suspecting the cause of death had to do with drugs, we won’t know until the coroner report comes out. In my opinion, I think her heart just gave out on her. Dr. Drew talked about addict recovery on CNN, if he had been treating Whitney, he would of advised her to take two years off. In 2010, Whitney told Oprah she was clean, I think she just bit off more than she could chew and it killed her. For those of us who have dealt with drugs issues, whether its our own or family/friends, the rule is take one day at a time. Sometimes planning ahead can lead to one’s demise.

I’ll miss Whitney. But like all great artists, her legacy will live through her music and talent. Be sure to watch the Grammys tonight, Jennifer Hudson will pay special tribute to Whitney Houston.

Special Thanksgiving treat… HDhami and Raje Shwari at SOBs

Basement Bhangra hosted by DJ Rekha is “New York’s best kept secret” for the underground party scene. On Thanksgiving Eve (November 24th) H Dhami and Raje Shwari will be performing live at SOBs. For the last couple of months, it seems like DJ Rekha has been supporting Raje Shwari, she dropped her new single – “Keep a Secret” at a Basement Bhangra night. Could this be a new comeback for Raje Shwari? Raje has been living under the radar after leaving Timbaland’s camp. Her “Indian Flute” had moderate success, but the thing about some Desi artists, especially females, they tend to get caught up with shady management and we never hear from them. H Dhami was featured on Raghav’s new single “So Much” (The Neo Desi mix) but his fans are waiting for his second album. Between 2008 – 2010, we’ve heard H Dhami on Punjabi By Nature’s “Crowd Pleaser” album and Mumzy’s single “One More Dance”

Is there an under current collaboration between H Dhami and Raje Shwari? How can the two of them benefit from each other? H could probably open doors for Raje in the UK Asian scene and Raje could kick open a mainstream door for H. It would be interesting to see H recite Magoo and Sebastian’s lyrics from Indian Flute.

Women in the scene – step up!

We have warriors like Hard Kaur, Miss Pooja, DJ Rekha, DJ Kayper – but more women need to step up in the scene, or better yet quit hooking up with “douche bag” producers (quoting my good friend Niku from Bol Punjab De) In the last 10 years, being in the scene, I’ve seen A LOT of women come and go. Back in the day, there would be parties, and a girl would have this hot single – she would rock the crowd. The next thing I know that hot single becomes a one hit wonder. Sad to say, I would round of maybe half of these so called producers don’t want to produce hits, they just want to take the women to bed and give them “hits” it’s desperate, it’s pathetic and it bothers me.

Girls, hold your ground – if something is “too good to be true” in most cases it probably is.

Study the scene, get to know the producers work before you get screw ball dreamy look in your eyes – thinking “he’s got my interest at heart” remember it’s OK to reject a producer/manager

Have more than one track under your belt – we love singles, but there’s a demand for albums – the fans want you to stick around

Don’t become a sample, become your own person

The kiss of death is when you start DATING your producer or manager – bad bad bad – don’t go there – if romance sparks – keep him as a boyfriend and find another manager. If he starts throwing a fit, reconsider even keeping him as a boyfriend, remember you need all the support you can get. Keep the negative energy out and drop the cry baby.

Imitation maybe the form of flattery, but it gets old QUICK – so stick to your true sound – don’t copy others

Find a mentor – don’t hate on other women – a woman mentor who is successful could give you some key pieces of advice (it’s worked for me in the media industry – I still contact my mentor when i feel stuck – she’s become my life long friend)

The scene is male dominated, however don’t let that discourage you, train yourself to LEARN everything, the more you know the more you can adapt, you might even consider being your OWN manager. Don’t go in the scene with tunnel vision
