Today Pravini releases her fifth album “Unexpected Turn of Events” but it’s not like her previous albums. Normally we’re used to hearing R&B/Soul vibe, but this time she’s switched it up. Her new album is a blend of raw rock and pop (interesting combo).

The album title not only reflects the music itself, but also the becoming of it. The majority of the songs were written not during writing sessions, but during unexpected moments in between.

Earlier this year, she released her single “Go!” and now she’s making plans to tour the Netherlands and UK.

Hopefully we can get some tracks from her album to pass onto DJ Dips and Mentor for Desi Raw Radio.

Whitney Houston: A triple threat talent…

I’m still in shell-shock over Whitney Houston’s death, I saw the breaking news story come up on my fb timeline. I googled it and all the articles confirmed the worst – Whitney Houston, Dead at 48.  Growing up in the 80s, there were two stars I always looked forward to seeing on the TV and they were Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Their songs were truly iconic during that tremulous decade. Whitney had this caliber talent to carry a tune, to the point where most of us would of gone breathless – she could still harmoniously sync to the beat.

I’ll remember Whitney as a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act. As I mention on my facebook, if you are remotely BLESSED with one of those talents it can take you far – but if you have all three – there’s NO LIMITS to your potential. However the demons Whitney faced, like so many of our talented superstars were drugs. She coined the term on the 2002 Diane Sawyer interview “crack is whack” that open a can of worms for comedians to poke fun at her. Right now there’s silence, no one is laughing – all we hear is her amazing vocals coming out of our speakers, TVs, computers and smart phones.

People are suspecting the cause of death had to do with drugs, we won’t know until the coroner report comes out. In my opinion, I think her heart just gave out on her. Dr. Drew talked about addict recovery on CNN, if he had been treating Whitney, he would of advised her to take two years off. In 2010, Whitney told Oprah she was clean, I think she just bit off more than she could chew and it killed her. For those of us who have dealt with drugs issues, whether its our own or family/friends, the rule is take one day at a time. Sometimes planning ahead can lead to one’s demise.

I’ll miss Whitney. But like all great artists, her legacy will live through her music and talent. Be sure to watch the Grammys tonight, Jennifer Hudson will pay special tribute to Whitney Houston.

Raghav sets Urban Desi Radio on FIRE!

Raghav always makes a great interview, the times we’ve met in the UK and California, he always cracks me up. He’s one of those artists, I can safely say, there’s NO ego about him – if there is – he HIDES really well. His new single, Fire, dropped on iTunes. He got a chance to work with producer/songwriter Jim Beanz, whose signed to Timbaland’s camp. We will hear more tracks Jim helped Raghav with on Raghav’s new album The Phoenix, which will be coming out in a couple of months. I can’t wait to showcase that on The Junction.

Petz: Do you have a storyline for Fire’s music video?

Raghav: It’s currently coming out on the radio in Canada, obviously we are going to launch it everywhere because we want to share it with the core fan base. I haven’t even thought about making a video yet – the video maybe a few months away, the record is going to be out in a few months.

Petz: When I say the name Jim Beanz, what comes to your mind?

Raghav: He’s just TALENTED! He’s one of the best producers; I’ve ever worked with. I can see why Nelly and everybody worked with him. He’s a great pop writer, I think of him as a friend. He’s extremely kind and he’s very professional. We just locked in and wrote some songs, each song is different from the other song.

Petz: I blogged about the artwork cover for Fire – it’s playful and colorful, are those paint splatters?

Raghav: You have to speak to the wonderful girl who does all that! They do look like paint splatters don’t they? Someone described it as an acid trip yesterday. (Laughs)

Petz: That was me. I described it as an acid trip.

Raghav: Oh! That was you? I thought that was kind of funny. The song had a lot of energy, I wanted the cover to have a lot of energy as well.

Petz: I feel sometimes, you don’t get the credit you deserve; will Fire catapult you into the mainstream spotlight? Is that even a priority?

Raghav: I’m very blessed; don’t ever feel sorry for me. In 2004, I was selling electronics in Calgary. By the end of the year, I had three top 10s. And four top 10s the year after that. I’ve been very lucky. It would be nice to have a global record happen once again, but the business has changed a lot, I’m keenly aware of that fact, it’s not the way it used to be. I would like to think Fire has that potential, but at the same time, if I can just share it with my fan base and have a career, then I’ll feel lucky.

Petz: What’s the meaning behind the name Phoenix?

Raghav: The Phoenix is a mythological character that can reinvent itself. It always takes its strengths and changes into something different. I like people to look at my catalog of material and think it’s diverse. I’ve never felt better – musically, then I do right now. I feel now is a good time to be conscious of my old skin and step into a new one.

Petz: Will there be any artists featured on the album?

Raghav: The tracks I’ve done with Jim, there’s none so far, but we are definitely talking to some people, hoping to make it work. But on Fire, for now, it’s just me; you are just going to have to put up with my voice.

Petz: I have no complaints. I adore your voice. I remember when you came to the AsianFX studio and surprised Sam Sam and me; we were busy plugging in your Humrahee track. And you told us your mother had a creative hand in helping you with that track. Has she helped you at all with this new album?

Raghav: Mom kind of gets involved with the Hindi songs, there’s one Hindi song on the album, that’s out on iTunes called Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya, and Mom did co-write that song with me. I’m very glad I get to work creatively with her. It’s very cool; I encourage people to check that out.

It’s been a minute, since we’ve heard from THE TRUTH, last time we exchanged tweets, he was heading to India and not looking forward to packing. It’s great to have him back in the UK and connecting once again with us on Urban Desi Radio. He’s got a new track and video out “I make ’em say” the first couple of second, it felt like being back in the theater watching the first 15 minutes of Inception. But the editing job and beats = brilliant! I’m sure we will get another dose of TRUTH SYRUP soon

F**k everyone — I’m the next in line. (The Truth)

I was introduce to The Truth by Mentor Beats, he sent me the Kya Karoon track. It got a lot of air play on Friction’s show on the BBC Asian Network. But was it just because he dropped Bobby’s name? The Truth needs your UK AMAS nominations for best newcomer and urban act!

Ready to get a dose of THE TRUTH?

I trust my pals in the UK when they tweet me up and say “Petz you got to check out this new artist!” Read below to check out a new artist Mentor is working with!

A new artist stepping into the scene, I always love fresh meat mmmmm!!! On July 22nd THE TRUTH will be debuting his first single “Kya Karoon” and just hearing a sample of it, in this video… I can’t wait! The Truth born and raised in East London, as a teenager, the underground UK garage scene captivated his attention. He made his own way through the underground urban scene in East London… where he got to work alongside several MCs and producers. He went toe-to-toe through some tough ass MC battles, finally THE TRUTH was encourage by his mates and fellow MCs to take his music to the next level.

‘I want to make a difference to music, this has been my dream as a child, no more poor quality videos we want to raise the standard of music and represent Asians in the right way, it’s not always about material things and that’s THE TRUTH’. says THE TRUTH. And “truthfully” speaking the Asian scene needs that.

“Kya Karoon” pays homage to some of the British Asian Music industries big players like AG Dolla, Imran khan and RDB. It talks about a young rapper trying to make it into the scene, but not knowing where to go and what to do. I think at one point in our lives, we have all felt this way, I know I have when I was in London trying to “make it” on radio. It amazes me, the Asian scene in the UK is FILLED I’m talking FILLED like a LANDFILL of talented artists, but sadly 90% of the time we will never get a chance to hear their music. Look what’s happening right now with the BBC Asian Network closure, Friction had a strong platform of debuting new artists for our ears… As you can tell, this song, “Kya Karoon” already has me pumped up.

Working with Bobby Wonda, another emerging producer in the scene, has had a passion for music since the tender age of five. He’s felt the trials and tribulations down this musical road. Between Bobby Wonda and THE TRUTH, together they will give the Asian scene an electrifying pulse!
