Bhangra Music Has Lost An Icon: Rest in Peace Kuly from RDB

22May

POSTED BY

RIP Kuly RDBSimply Bhangra has announced  that Kuly from RDB (Rhythm Dhol Bass) has passed away on the evening of May 22nd. No news media can confirm or comment on the cause of his death right now.

Plenty South Asian music artists and fans from all over the world are being effected by this tragic loss. RDB was one of the first Bhangra groups to be noticed worldwide among the young South Asian generation. RDB consists of three brothers Manj, Surj and Kuly – who was the eldest.

We at Urban Desi Radio are really touched by this loss in particular because RDB was one of the first Bhangra groups to really showcase what Urban Desi music really was. The integration of East meets West Bhangra music was mastered by RDB. They have really paved the way for many South Asian artists in the past decade. When RDB partnered with Snoop Dogg, they made immense waves in the South Asian music industry.

Kuly will be missed, but never forgotten.

*Special Thanks to SimplyBhangra.com for breaking the news.

REST IN PEACE KULY

Whitney Houston: A triple threat talent…

Screen Shot 2012-02-12 at 9.21.31 AM

I’m still in shell-shock over Whitney Houston’s death, I saw the breaking news story come up on my fb timeline. I googled it and all the articles confirmed the worst – Whitney Houston, Dead at 48.  Growing up in the 80s, there were two stars I always looked forward to seeing on the TV and they were Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Their songs were truly iconic during that tremulous decade. Whitney had this caliber talent to carry a tune, to the point where most of us would of gone breathless – she could still harmoniously sync to the beat.

I’ll remember Whitney as a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act. As I mention on my facebook, if you are remotely BLESSED with one of those talents it can take you far – but if you have all three – there’s NO LIMITS to your potential. However the demons Whitney faced, like so many of our talented superstars were drugs. She coined the term on the 2002 Diane Sawyer interview “crack is whack” that open a can of worms for comedians to poke fun at her. Right now there’s silence, no one is laughing – all we hear is her amazing vocals coming out of our speakers, TVs, computers and smart phones.

People are suspecting the cause of death had to do with drugs, we won’t know until the coroner report comes out. In my opinion, I think her heart just gave out on her. Dr. Drew talked about addict recovery on CNN, if he had been treating Whitney, he would of advised her to take two years off. In 2010, Whitney told Oprah she was clean, I think she just bit off more than she could chew and it killed her. For those of us who have dealt with drugs issues, whether its our own or family/friends, the rule is take one day at a time. Sometimes planning ahead can lead to one’s demise.

I’ll miss Whitney. But like all great artists, her legacy will live through her music and talent. Be sure to watch the Grammys tonight, Jennifer Hudson will pay special tribute to Whitney Houston.

Gorilla Chilla vibing away…

By: Nayna

From musician, pianist, DJ, to singer, mc, beat-boxer, rapper; describing Mr Jahid ‘GC’ Samed’s job title is a major feat in itself and to hail him as a music producer would not do him justice. Known in the industry as Gorillachilla, his collaborations include Nafis, Young Twist, Metz & Trix and RDB, to name a few. The man of musical talent is releasing his much awaited new track ‘Sohni Nehn’ this March alongside the new album, ‘Music in My Blood’ and I had the pleasure of meeting him to find out the inspiration behind it.

Nayna: So Mr GC, you’ve been in hiding for a while now, been busy?

Gorilla Chilla: Hey, how you doing? I’ve been so busy locked up in the studio, been working on literally 100’s of new songs and projects and also DJing all over the country, been mad busy as always.

N: I’ve heard the new single it has a very catchy tune. What’s the inspiration behind it?

GC: Well I’m always performing and DJing at weddings and clubs etc, so thought it was time for a new party banger, something to get people dancing.

N: Were there any other influences on the track?

GC: This song was produced by myself and the legendary Kam Frantic. If you put two dangerous producers on a beat you will get a masterpiece and it was such an honour and inspiration to work with the man himself.

N: In the whole process of producing a single, what’s the best part of it for you?

GC: The best part is when it all starts to come together, that’s usually when I lay the vocals on the music then I think, ‘Ok I’m not too far from the goal now’.

N: Is each process the same? Did you learn anything new this time around?

GC: This time around, it was all a new experience for me as I’m always in the studio doing my thing, what most producers do but with this track it was the 1st time on-camera for me and that was a good experience. Making the beat and the track wasn’t too hard, that’s my field as a producer, that’s something that comes naturally to me now.

N: If there was one artist, alive or dead that you could work with, who would it be?

GC: I’d love to work with 3 if I had the chance; Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mohd Rafi Saab, and Michael Jackson. They are my heroes and inspiration, may God rest their souls in peace.

N: At what point do you know that your single is a success?

GC: For me it’s not about the music being a success, as long as people enjoy the music. I’m just grateful to be able to get my music and put it out there for people to hear and I’ll keep doing it for as long as you all want to keep hearing it.

N: What can we expect from the new album, ‘Music in my Blood’?

GC: There will be some big names but I’m not going to give away who. The songs are mixed, a few clubby songs, a few slow songs, something for everybody.

N: And how will we be able to get hold of the single and new album.

GC: The single and album are officially out in March and will be available on iTunes, on music juice and in all major record shops.

N: Any future projects in the pipeline?

GC: My dream was always to collaborate with worldwide singers and it seems those dreams will be coming true. I am working with some mainstream UK artists at the moment and working on some Arabic, Bengali and even Grime albums. I’d love to try out the Bollywood scene. I’m doing as much as I can right now and do have a surprise for the fans so watch this space…

Keep your ears open for the new single out in March and make sure you check out the new album too. GC never fails to entertain his fans, and the new single is no exception.

Before DJ Sanj there had  been no artist coming out of the US or Canada with legit Desi tunes and remixes. Sanj  was one of the first Desi artists to represent North America.  He took mainstream loops with Punjabi vocals and made some musical magic.  C’mon admit it, I know you’re still bumping his mixes!

13. Amrinder Gill

-3

He has one of the most passionate voices in Punjabi music. Guys, if you really want your girl to melt- play one of Arminder Gill’s romantic ballads. Arminder has impressed us with the diversity of music genres incorporated in his songs including: folk-rooted tracks to up-tempo dance tunes for the bhangra lovers, hey… he’s even had a couple rock songs!  A Punjabi artist who experienments with every type of music genre has earned the 13th place on our list!

Picture 19

Okay fine, he’s an artist most of our parents/grandparents listen to but, they have been raving about this man for a reason. His lyrical poetry revels the glory of mysticism. In fact, his poems have inspired many around the world. Sartaj has taken his sufiana music career to another level by dressing and writing like Warris Shah, a man who gave a new direction to Punjabi literature. Looks like Sartaj may be on same path, looking to change the world.

11. Lehmber Hussainpuri

It’s a talented voice you can’t fail to recognize. Lehmber first appeared on the bhangra scene in collaboration with Dr. Zeus on the album Unda the Influence. The world hasn’t seen a band like this yet. Tell me where can you get a partially Desi band who keep their traditional sense yet, break the barriers of typical pop music. Do you remember the phrase ‘Desi Rock’? Well, that phrase originated by Swami music! Their album Desi Rock was voted a BBC Radio 1 favorite which then, launched their career into orbit. They have been producing fresh-desi-neofunk beats ever since. UDR loves raw music and artists, thus placing them for #9 on our list.

Picture 21

You’ve probably danced to all his hit singles: Gwandian Da Dhol, Kangna, Ah Ni Kuriye, Sat Sri Akal, Assi Haan Punjabi and more. If Lehmber is singing over a sick beat, it’s probably Zeus and in the background making some music magic. Zeus is a talented producers, I’m sure you all can’t wait for what he has coming up next!

7. Raghav
Years Active: 2003- Present
Genres- Pop, Hindi Pop

-7

His voice sounds like it’s coming out of some old raagi’s mouth but, the funny thing is he’s a young guy with a enourmous voice. With over 1.3 million records sold worldwide, Raghav has raised the bar for Desi-pop artists.

6.Miss Pooja

-11

This list wouldn’t be complete without the most popular bhangra brothers on the scene. Ever since they step foot onto the plate, they’ve always brought a new sound with them and created their own type of genre of music. Teaming up with big names like Akshay Kumar, Snoop Dogg and others has definitely put them on our top three.
