Thinking about becoming Vegan? Tips from S-Endz

I tease S-Endz and call him my “Vegan Guru” (seriously he is) I’m still not convinced I can go completely vegan, however I’m attempting to adapt some vegan principals after juicing for 60 days. To me he’s the ultimate definition of coolness. Thanks for giving us a little dose of your vegan knowledge. 😉 (and giving me a lesson on vegan cheese over twitter heh)

Petz: I know you were a vegetarian for three years before the vegan transition. Think back to your pre-vegetarian days and now being vegan – how has your health improved?

S-Endz: My health has vastly improved since I became vegan. I have more energy, more stamina, my BMI is ideal, I’m more focused… But most impressively, I haven’t caught a single cold since I became vegan, even when I’ve been around multiple friends and family who have been sick. Dairy consumption leads to increased mucous production in the body, which is obviously to be avoided. I would suggest that everyone reading this goes and reads Dr. Robert Kradjian’s “Milk Letter” and/or watch the documentary “Forks Over Knives” to understand what dairy consumption is really doing to your body. It’s truly horrifying.

Petz: When you’re not in the studio, what sort of dishes does S-Endz like to whip up in the kitchen?

S-Endz: I like Indian food, of course. I learned from my Masi how to make a few things. I make a pretty awesome yellow dal, and aloo palak. I like making stir fries with tofu too, and I make great vegan Mexican food – bean burritos with lots of fresh veggies, jalapenos, guacamole and soy cheese :-)

Petz: Since you have had the best of both worlds, is it easier for you to be vegan in UK or US? What are the differences and similarities?

S-Endz: It’s definitely easier in the US because you can get a lot of great vegan specific products at even your average Wal Mart or Safeway, and you have places like Whole Foods. In the UK, it’s harder unless you live in London. But generally speaking, being vegan is easy, and much easier than I had thought it would be. In fact, if anyone reading this tries to go vegan even just for a few weeks, I’m confident they’d be surprised at just how easy it is.

Petz: Do you think you could beat Gordan Ramsay in a vegan cook off?

S-Endz: Honestly, I’ve never watched a single show of Gordon Ramsay so I have no idea whether he’d be able to make good vegan food. Given that he’s a chef by profession, I’d certainly hope so. But cooking for yourself is a different thing to cooking for others so I couldn’t say. I know how to make things I like to eat and that’s good enough for me!

Petz: Hey listeners, I personally think S-Endz can take on Ramsay! 😉

First off if this is the album cover, I’m already in love. Secondly no one can deny that S-Endz is a very unique producer and artist. He’s been a bit of Santa Claus lately. In the last two weeks he’s already given away two singles to his fans. We got them on our UDR 24 hour page. For right now, here’s his second single – Do U Wanna Come?

Diamond (DJ Swami) dropped the new name of SWAMI album on BBC1, *drum roll* UPGRADE. This name intrigues me, over the last couple of years the band has been giving their fans and friends playful teasers/snips, I can’t wait to get my petz paws on the new tracks! Here’s a FREE download of Dumdaraka check it out! I predict this is going to be the biggest album drop for 2011, and we need a big BOOM, bring it on SWAMI.

2011 the year of Swami…

If I can pick any album I’m TRULY looking forward to, it would be Swami’s new album, I know the group were busy in the studio during 2010, but I know the wait will be worth it! S-Endz sent us an update…

But 2010 was a significant year for another reason. That reason is XXXXXX – aka the new Swami album that has been a long time in the making. It’s so close, I promise you that. Not only did I co-write every song – I also rap on all of them and sing on some. It’s the album that will define us for generations to come. I can feel it. I’ve never been more proud of any work I’ve done than I am of this album

and what about S-Endz debut album?? I’m still jamming to Outer Space, but I’m itching for some new music, as a Valentines Gift to all his friends and fans, he gave us a sneaky peak of Fashion II with Kazz Kumar

My Neosouljas, I wish I had more news to share on my debut album, “Emanate”. I know I’ve been promising it for three years now, but the reasons for the delay are simple…. I REFUSE to settle for “good enough”. After all – you only get once chance to make your debut album. I’m not like all these other artists that force their sub-standard work on the world, even going as far as shooting music videos for weak, emulative, pathetic songs in the hopes of garnering some airplay on the most niche of channels.

The positive news is that I am VERY happy with a great deal of what’s been recorded, and I hope to have more news to share soon.

Beyond “Emanate”, the follow-up is titled and conceptualized. Neofunk is about to hit a new level in the next 12 months. Get ready.

Bring it on S-Endz… Bring it on! Hopefully we are one of the channels you will consider showcasing your tracks!

I’m looking forward to featuring this track on the Junction!

The eccentric British Indian pop/alternative/bhangra band – Swami, is Urban Desi Radio’s Artist of the Week. Even though Swami is referred to a Hindu teacher, the name is an abbreviation for “So Who Am I” (something I just learn right now) they been keeping busy these days…they did several shows in Canada this summer (Sugarless Tour)… check out the clips of S-Endz and Diamond at a studio in Toronto.. wicked stuff.

S-Endz and I we had a little twitter banter interview and he revealed the band was working on their next album. They are one of the first groups in the British Desi scene, I recall who really made use out of ustream to connect with their fans… I remember seeing clips of their band practice, it really gave the fans up close and personal insight of what goes on during a Swami Band practice.

I can’t wait for their new album… but still jamming to sugarless (awesome track)

This is so adorable and rocking! Check this out, one of Swami’s fans, Romy (age 9) drew a picture of the group! I loved how Romy had Bobby give a little wave! So cute!!! This is definitely work of art, if it doesn’t make front cover of the album… perhaps it can be put inside the album booklet… or made into a retro t-shirt for all of Swami fans to enjoy!!!

Your First Song for your Wedding?

This week on “Street Talk” with PHS, Rav and Dee, they asked “what would be your alternative first song for your wedding?” I just finished listening to “Desi Rock” from Swami… the beat was fresh in my head, I was picturing “Desi Rock” as a first wedding song, I would love to have it as my first song… its an upbeat tempo, I like how its different and unique. I would love to have Swami be there PERSONALLY at my wedding… that would ROCK. Follow up by Taz singing “Rapture of Love”

Taz and Swami…. I would be in Urban Desi Heaven…. I wonder if the PHS boys made fun of my pick off air? Check out Panjabi Hit Squad on the BBC Asian Network every Saturday.

The Neofunk Newsletter – Issue #2 Jan 2010

Dear NeoSouljas,

The momentum from our EP release of ‘Outer Space’ continues to grow and our movement continues to strengthen. I must warn you, I have recently been made aware of some detractors who claim publically to support our movement yet denounce it in private. They seek to use our methods for their own means, imitating our words, our styles, our sounds, our methods. However, what happens when they run out of ideas? That is the solace we must take through being the creators and the supporters of the truth.

Any of you who have not yet checked out the EP, you can do so at http://music.s-endz.com

The Musictionary

NeoSoulja Steven Anthony (click his name to follow him on Twitter) runs a music blog – themusictionary.com, and they recently reviewed ‘Outer Space’, noting that:

“The track is a strange affair — the music itself sounds like a cross between Trent Reznor and Kanye West, a sound that S-Endz has coined “Neofunk.” It’s different for sure, but more importantly it works and sounds like nothing you’ve heard before”

Head over here for the full review – http://themusictionary.com/?p=2915

New year, new targets

I have decided to start 2010 with some new methods. One of these is tangible targets. By this, I mean regular steps that can be achieved on a monthly basis for the greater good of our movement.

We’re starting with Facebook.

I need all of you to sign up to be fans on Facebook – the address is http://facebook.com/neofunk

Suggest it to your friends also and spread the word. If we can reach 500 fans by the end of this month (January 2010), then on the first, I will be sending out a mass message on the 1st February, via Facebook, and that message will include a link to a brand new song, entitled ‘What Ya Need (The Neofunk)‘.

Believe in the message….believe in the movement…..believe in the NEOFUNK and accept no imitations! This song will only be premiered to those of you who are following me on Facebook, so hit that link above now!

The Current State of SWAMI

I know that many of you are eager to know what the band is up to, so I am about to share some information that is not yet fully public knowledge!

We are 20 songs deep into the new album. All 20 of these songs have been co-written by myself and Diamond and they all represent the highest standard of any Swami material to date in both songwriting and production. This is a project of THE highest calibre….on a higher level than anything we have done in the past. We have begun to record live percussion ideas from dhol maestro Bobby P, and at some point soon, Sups, Liana and I will begin to record the vocals properly.

We intend to document as much of this process as possible for your consumption, with live broadcast sessions, photos and videos from the recording, and more. We intend to finish all 20 songs – then select the best of those for the new album. Stay tuned…..if you thought ‘Sugarless’ was big, you ain’t seen nothing yet…

…that’s all for Issue #2 of the Neofunk Newsletter….

remember…..keep the neofunk vibes flowin, wherever you are…

S-Endz is an artist and producer from Birmingham, UK, a vocalist and songwriter in critically acclaimed electropop band Swami, an affiliate of the late Tupac Shakur’s final group The Havenotz, and occasional presenter and actor.

Shooting to fame at age 16 following the release of the Swami album ‘DesiRock’ and it’s remixed international version ‘So Who Am I‘ on Sony BMG, the success led the band to embark on a world tour, including a headline performance at the MTV Style Awards. The title track would also feature in multi-platinum video game ‘FIFA World Cup 2006‘ and independent UK movie ‘Mischief Night‘. The popularity of Swami in India would lead to increased media exposure – notably Bollywood star Akshay Kumars infamous dance routine to ‘DesiRock‘ at the Star Screen Awards. Upon being asked to work on a song for the Bollywood movie ‘Corporate‘ starring leading Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, Swami bandleader Diamond and S-Endz co-wrote and vocalized a new international mix of the films theme song ‘Oh Sikander‘.

Swami followed this up in 2007 with their album – ‘Equalize‘, which spun two further hit singles – ‘Hey Hey‘ and ‘Electro Jugni‘, the latter of which appeared on two popular Universal Records compilations: ‘Shaanti presents….Mighty Asian Beats‘ and ‘Made In India Vol. 2‘. Swami embarked on another world tour to promote the album throughout 2007 and 2008.

Swami returned in 2009 with ‘53431’, a hits compilation to mark 10 years of the band’s existence. It featured their biggest song to date. ‘Sugarless‘ was one of two new songs on the compilation and while Swami toured to promote the release, the song took off. All critics, bloggers and DJ’s of the South Asian music scene would later declare it to be one of their top songs of the year. In this time frame, S-Endz also hit big with his first solo release. The ‘Outer Space‘ EP delighted DJ’s worldwide with a fresh new sound, dubbed ‘Neofunk‘. Reviews were unanimously positive with the new sound, a mix of heavy hip-hop and funk with electro, pop and rock influences.

2010 will see the release of Swami’s international English language album on a major US label as well as the release of S-Endz’ debut solo album ‘Emanate‘.
