Whitney Houston: A triple threat talent…

Screen Shot 2012-02-12 at 9.21.31 AM

I’m still in shell-shock over Whitney Houston’s death, I saw the breaking news story come up on my fb timeline. I googled it and all the articles confirmed the worst – Whitney Houston, Dead at 48.  Growing up in the 80s, there were two stars I always looked forward to seeing on the TV and they were Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Their songs were truly iconic during that tremulous decade. Whitney had this caliber talent to carry a tune, to the point where most of us would of gone breathless – she could still harmoniously sync to the beat.

I’ll remember Whitney as a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act. As I mention on my facebook, if you are remotely BLESSED with one of those talents it can take you far – but if you have all three – there’s NO LIMITS to your potential. However the demons Whitney faced, like so many of our talented superstars were drugs. She coined the term on the 2002 Diane Sawyer interview “crack is whack” that open a can of worms for comedians to poke fun at her. Right now there’s silence, no one is laughing – all we hear is her amazing vocals coming out of our speakers, TVs, computers and smart phones.

People are suspecting the cause of death had to do with drugs, we won’t know until the coroner report comes out. In my opinion, I think her heart just gave out on her. Dr. Drew talked about addict recovery on CNN, if he had been treating Whitney, he would of advised her to take two years off. In 2010, Whitney told Oprah she was clean, I think she just bit off more than she could chew and it killed her. For those of us who have dealt with drugs issues, whether its our own or family/friends, the rule is take one day at a time. Sometimes planning ahead can lead to one’s demise.

I’ll miss Whitney. But like all great artists, her legacy will live through her music and talent. Be sure to watch the Grammys tonight, Jennifer Hudson will pay special tribute to Whitney Houston.

Diamond (DJ Swami) dropped the new name of SWAMI album on BBC1, *drum roll* UPGRADE. This name intrigues me, over the last couple of years the band has been giving their fans and friends playful teasers/snips, I can’t wait to get my petz paws on the new tracks! Here’s a FREE download of Dumdaraka check it out! I predict this is going to be the biggest album drop for 2011, and we need a big BOOM, bring it on SWAMI.

2011 the year of Swami…

Picture 12

If I can pick any album I’m TRULY looking forward to, it would be Swami’s new album, I know the group were busy in the studio during 2010, but I know the wait will be worth it! S-Endz sent us an update…

But 2010 was a significant year for another reason. That reason is XXXXXX – aka the new Swami album that has been a long time in the making. It’s so close, I promise you that. Not only did I co-write every song – I also rap on all of them and sing on some. It’s the album that will define us for generations to come. I can feel it. I’ve never been more proud of any work I’ve done than I am of this album

and what about S-Endz debut album?? I’m still jamming to Outer Space, but I’m itching for some new music, as a Valentines Gift to all his friends and fans, he gave us a sneaky peak of Fashion II with Kazz Kumar

My Neosouljas, I wish I had more news to share on my debut album, “Emanate”. I know I’ve been promising it for three years now, but the reasons for the delay are simple…. I REFUSE to settle for “good enough”. After all – you only get once chance to make your debut album. I’m not like all these other artists that force their sub-standard work on the world, even going as far as shooting music videos for weak, emulative, pathetic songs in the hopes of garnering some airplay on the most niche of channels.

The positive news is that I am VERY happy with a great deal of what’s been recorded, and I hope to have more news to share soon.

Beyond “Emanate”, the follow-up is titled and conceptualized. Neofunk is about to hit a new level in the next 12 months. Get ready.

Bring it on S-Endz… Bring it on! Hopefully we are one of the channels you will consider showcasing your tracks!

Oh S-Endz, besides free music downloads another way to my heart is anything EXCLUSIVE you put out. For all of you fans of Swami and personal S-Endz, this is super Valentines Day Treat… a sneak peak of Fashion, he adds that one of a kind Neofunk flavor with Kazz Kumar (whose responsible for making me say dirty words) enjoy this clip. I’m looking forward to featuring this track on the Junction!

This list is like no other, something that can only come out once in a decade. These artists shaped the 2000’s with their talent and dedication to the scene. Urban Desi Radio proudly presents the Top 15 Desi Artists of the decade!

15. Atif Aslam

Aslam, a Pakistan native, had been widely recognized in the Bollywood scene and has given several hits such as Woh Lamhe, Tere Bin, Kuch Is Tarah, Tera Hoone Laaga Hoon and more. He’s known for his powerful vocal belting technique and ladies… the way he romances in his songs, doesn’t it just make you melt?Bollywood music would be tasteless without him.

14. DJ Sanj
Years Active: 2002- Present
Genres: Bhangra, Punjabi and Hip-Hop

-2

Before DJ Sanj there had  been no artist coming out of the US or Canada with legit Desi tunes and remixes. Sanj  was one of the first Desi artists to represent North America.  He took mainstream loops with Punjabi vocals and made some musical magic.  C’mon admit it, I know you’re still bumping his mixes!

13. Amrinder Gill
Years Active: 2000- Present
Genres: Punjabi, Bhangra, Romance, Hindi Pop

-3

He has one of the most passionate voices in Punjabi music. Guys, if you really want your girl to melt- play one of Arminder Gill’s romantic ballads. Arminder has impressed us with the diversity of music genres incorporated in his songs including: folk-rooted tracks to up-tempo dance tunes for the bhangra lovers, hey… he’s even had a couple rock songs!  A Punjabi artist who experienments with every type of music genre has earned the 13th place on our list!

12. Satinder Sartaj
Years Active: 2003-Present
Genres: Sufi, Folk, Punjabi

Picture 19

Okay fine, he’s an artist most of our parents/grandparents listen to but, they have been raving about this man for a reason. His lyrical poetry revels the glory of mysticism. In fact, his poems have inspired many around the world. Sartaj has taken his sufiana music career to another level by dressing and writing like Warris Shah, a man who gave a new direction to Punjabi literature. Looks like Sartaj may be on same path, looking to change the world.

11. Lehmber Hussainpuri
Years Active: 2001-Present
Genres: Punjabi and Bhangra

-4

It’s a talented voice you can’t fail to recognize. Lehmber first appeared on the bhangra scene in collaboration with Dr. Zeus on the album Unda the Influence. Lehmber’s voice became a hit with both traditional and modern bhangra fans. We can’t forget his most notable tracks: Ah Ni Kuriye, Das Ja, Saadi Gali, Seetiyan and the worldwide smash hit Desi Rock. Hit after hit Lehmber stays in the spotlight!

10. MC Metz and Trix
Years Active: 2000-Present

Picture 19

These two MCs became the hottest duo to hit the Urban Desi music scene in the UK. After teaming up with big names like Surinder Rattan, RDB, Mac G and others they quickly gained status as the ‘Red man & Method Man’ of the Desi music scene. 9. Swami
Years Active: 2000- Present
Genres: Pop, Alternative, Hip-Hop, Bhangra and Rock

-5

The world hasn’t seen a band like this yet. Tell me where can you get a partially Desi band who keep their traditional sense yet, break the barriers of typical pop music. Do you remember the phrase ‘Desi Rock’? Well, that phrase originated by Swami music! Their album Desi Rock was voted a BBC Radio 1 favorite which then, launched their career into orbit. They have been producing fresh-desi-neofunk beats ever since. UDR loves raw music and artists, thus placing them for #9 on our list.

8.  Dr. Zeus
Years Active: 2001-Present
Genres: Bhangra, Punjabi and Urban Desi

Picture 21

You’ve probably danced to all his hit singles: Gwandian Da Dhol, Kangna, Ah Ni Kuriye, Sat Sri Akal, Assi Haan Punjabi and more. If Lehmber is singing over a sick beat, it’s probably Zeus and in the background making some music magic. Zeus has the ability to take traditional Punjabi lyrics and music and merge them into something so hip and modern. Zeus is a talented producers, I’m sure you all can’t wait for what he has coming up next!

7. Raghav
Years Active: 2003- Present
Genres- Pop, Hindi Pop

-7

His voice sounds like it’s coming out of some old raagi’s mouth but, the funny thing is he’s a young guy with a enourmous voice. He hails out of Canada, was vocally trained in Los Angles and now resides in the UK- this proves that Raghav is surely all over the map and verfies his worldwide fame. With over 1.3 million records sold worldwide, Raghav has raised the bar for Desi-pop artists.

6.Miss Pooja
Years Active: 2006-Present
Genres: Bhangra and Punjabi

-8

She’s known as “The Duet Queen.” If you happen to come across someone blasting bhangra music, most likely it’s a duet sung by Miss Pooja. She’s produces hit after hit and you know you can’t get enough of her flirty and fun duets. It’s a relief to see female artists putting in much time and effort to reach the top! Girl Power!

5. Juggy D
Years Active: 2004- Present
Genres: Punjabi, Bhangra, Urban Desi

-9

Thanks to Rishi Rich, Juggy D made his debut alongside Jay Sean. Juggy D has been the face of the UK Bhangra  scene ever since he broke through in 2004. Not only has he collaborated with his fellow peers but, has worked with big names like Madonna, Ricky Martin and Craig David. Let’s not forget his guest apperrences in a couple Bollywood films, this guy was a hit and will continue to be!

4.  Imran Khan
Years Active:
Genre: Punjabi and Urban Desi

Picture 23

We started warming up to him after his hit single, ‘Ni Nachleh’ and since then, we can’t stop bumping his beats! Although he has only had one album, Imran Khan has taken the Desi music scene by storm. His album Untouchable came out in 2009 with his catchy tune ‘Amplifier’ which, has been playing in every corner of the world, with youngsters and adults alike! Imran Khan has put Holland on the map!

3. Bohemia
Years Active: 2002-Present
Genre: Punjabi, Urdu and Desi Hip-Hop

Picture 20

Critically  acclaimed as the ‘pioneer of Desi hip-hop’, Bohemia has set a standard for artists rapping in Punjabi and Urdu. After 3 hit albums: Vich Pardesan De, Pesa Nasha Pyar and The Rap Star, Bohemia has made his mark in the Desi music industry even, and even in Bollywood! Bohemia will continue to wow us with his rhymes and urban flavor.

2. RDB
Years Active: 2001-Present
Genre: Punjabi, Bhangra and Urban Desi

-11

This list wouldn’t be complete without the most popular bhangra brothers on the scene. Ever since they step foot onto the plate, they’ve always brought a new sound with them and created their own type of genre of music. Teaming up with big names like Akshay Kumar, Snoop Dogg and others has definitely put them on our top three.

1. Jay Sean
Years Active: 2003- Present
Genre:  R&B, Pop, Hip-Hop

-12

The first ever Desi to sign with one of the biggest records labels in the world. You can’t beat that, can you? Not only has this guy been a favorite with the Desi folks but, now he has made a name for himself in mainstream music. After being signed with Cash Money records, this guy has been flying high on the clouds of fame! If your rubbing  shoulders with Lil Wayne, Birdman and others alike, your doing something right. That’s why Mr. Kamaljit Jhooti has earned our #1 spot.

The eccentric British Indian pop/alternative/bhangra band – Swami, is Urban Desi Radio’s Artist of the Week. Even though Swami is referred to a Hindu teacher, the name is an abbreviation for “So Who Am I” (something I just learn right now) they been keeping busy these days…they did several shows in Canada this summer (Sugarless Tour)… check out the clips of S-Endz and Diamond at a studio in Toronto.. wicked stuff.

S-Endz and I we had a little twitter banter interview and he revealed the band was working on their next album. They are one of the first groups in the British Desi scene, I recall who really made use out of ustream to connect with their fans… I remember seeing clips of their band practice, it really gave the fans up close and personal insight of what goes on during a Swami Band practice.

I can’t wait for their new album… but still jamming to sugarless (awesome track)

This is definitely work of art, if it doesn’t make front cover of the album… perhaps it can be put inside the album booklet… or made into a retro t-shirt for all of Swami fans to enjoy!!!

Your First Song for your Wedding?

Picture 49

Picture 50

This week on “Street Talk” with PHS, Rav and Dee, they asked “what would be your alternative first song for your wedding?” I just finished listening to “Desi Rock” from Swami… the beat was fresh in my head, I was picturing “Desi Rock” as a first wedding song, I would love to have it as my first song… its an upbeat tempo, I like how its different and unique. I would love to have Swami be there PERSONALLY at my wedding… that would ROCK. Follow up by Taz singing “Rapture of Love”

Taz and Swami…. I would be in Urban Desi Heaven…. I wonder if the PHS boys made fun of my pick off air? Check out Panjabi Hit Squad on the BBC Asian Network every Saturday.

Take a walk on the Neofunk side with S-Endz

From one of our favorite Urban Desi Artists, S-Endz, brings us his newsletter, check out what’s going on in his world! And what’s going on with Swami..we all indulged in ” Sugarless” which is currently being streamed on UDR 24 hour stream, along with other Swami tracks and S-Endz “Outer Space” track

S-Endz gave Petz the heads up he will be around the west coast… but not Cali… hopefully Oregon gives him a warm welcome …

The Neofunk Newsletter – Issue #2 Jan 2010

Dear NeoSouljas,

The momentum from our EP release of ‘Outer Space’ continues to grow and our movement continues to strengthen. I must warn you, I have recently been made aware of some detractors who claim publically to support our movement yet denounce it in private. They seek to use our methods for their own means, imitating our words, our styles, our sounds, our methods. However, what happens when they run out of ideas? That is the solace we must take through being the creators and the supporters of the truth.

Any of you who have not yet checked out the EP, you can do so at http://music.s-endz.com

The Musictionary

NeoSoulja Steven Anthony (click his name to follow him on Twitter) runs a music blog – themusictionary.com, and they recently reviewed ‘Outer Space’, noting that:

“The track is a strange affair — the music itself sounds like a cross between Trent Reznor and Kanye West, a sound that S-Endz has coined “Neofunk.” It’s different for sure, but more importantly it works and sounds like nothing you’ve heard before”

Head over here for the full review – http://themusictionary.com/?p=2915

New year, new targets

I have decided to start 2010 with some new methods. One of these is tangible targets. By this, I mean regular steps that can be achieved on a monthly basis for the greater good of our movement.

We’re starting with Facebook.

I need all of you to sign up to be fans on Facebook – the address is http://facebook.com/neofunk

Suggest it to your friends also and spread the word. If we can reach 500 fans by the end of this month (January 2010), then on the first, I will be sending out a mass message on the 1st February, via Facebook, and that message will include a link to a brand new song, entitled ‘What Ya Need (The Neofunk)‘.

Believe in the message….believe in the movement…..believe in the NEOFUNK and accept no imitations! This song will only be premiered to those of you who are following me on Facebook, so hit that link above now!

The Current State of SWAMI

I know that many of you are eager to know what the band is up to, so I am about to share some information that is not yet fully public knowledge!

We are 20 songs deep into the new album. All 20 of these songs have been co-written by myself and Diamond and they all represent the highest standard of any Swami material to date in both songwriting and production. This is a project of THE highest calibre….on a higher level than anything we have done in the past. We have begun to record live percussion ideas from dhol maestro Bobby P, and at some point soon, Sups, Liana and I will begin to record the vocals properly.

We intend to document as much of this process as possible for your consumption, with live broadcast sessions, photos and videos from the recording, and more. We intend to finish all 20 songs – then select the best of those for the new album. Stay tuned…..if you thought ‘Sugarless’ was big, you ain’t seen nothing yet…

…that’s all for Issue #2 of the Neofunk Newsletter….

remember…..keep the neofunk vibes flowin, wherever you are…

Make sure to follow me on Twitter and Facebook

S-Endz is an artist and producer from Birmingham, UK, a vocalist and songwriter in critically acclaimed electropop band Swami, an affiliate of the late Tupac Shakur’s final group The Havenotz, and occasional presenter and actor.

Shooting to fame at age 16 following the release of the Swami album ‘DesiRock’ and it’s remixed international version ‘So Who Am I‘ on Sony BMG, the success led the band to embark on a world tour, including a headline performance at the MTV Style Awards. The title track would also feature in multi-platinum video game ‘FIFA World Cup 2006‘ and independent UK movie ‘Mischief Night‘. The popularity of Swami in India would lead to increased media exposure – notably Bollywood star Akshay Kumars infamous dance routine to ‘DesiRock‘ at the Star Screen Awards. Upon being asked to work on a song for the Bollywood movie ‘Corporate‘ starring leading Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, Swami bandleader Diamond and S-Endz co-wrote and vocalized a new international mix of the films theme song ‘Oh Sikander‘.

Swami followed this up in 2007 with their album – ‘Equalize‘, which spun two further hit singles – ‘Hey Hey‘ and ‘Electro Jugni‘, the latter of which appeared on two popular Universal Records compilations: ‘Shaanti presents….Mighty Asian Beats‘ and ‘Made In India Vol. 2‘. Swami embarked on another world tour to promote the album throughout 2007 and 2008.

Swami returned in 2009 with ‘53431’, a hits compilation to mark 10 years of the band’s existence. It featured their biggest song to date. ‘Sugarless‘ was one of two new songs on the compilation and while Swami toured to promote the release, the song took off. All critics, bloggers and DJ’s of the South Asian music scene would later declare it to be one of their top songs of the year. In this time frame, S-Endz also hit big with his first solo release. The ‘Outer Space‘ EP delighted DJ’s worldwide with a fresh new sound, dubbed ‘Neofunk‘. Reviews were unanimously positive with the new sound, a mix of heavy hip-hop and funk with electro, pop and rock influences.

2010 will see the release of Swami’s international English language album on a major US label as well as the release of S-Endz’ debut solo album ‘Emanate‘.
