After a four year hiatus, FIFA Street 2012 is back and one of the tracks featured in the game is Dub Reflex by Celt Islam. I love the FIFA series and the fact the pick unique beats to go with their games makes me a bigger fan!

Overweight Man Wants Video To Go Viral…

4Mar

POSTED BY

How many times have you had an Auntie poke you and whisper in your ear – You need to lose weight? Don’t you find that annoying? What makes it worse they keep piling on the fried pakoras, paneer and ladoos on our plates! Can we say Devil’s advocate?! Pshhh!

I know this isn’t an Urban Desi story per say, but I felt it was important to share this video. It’s coming from my compassionate side because I can relate to this man’s struggle (picture below) and it’s a continue struggle for me because I have an eating disorder. I’m an over-eater, don’t laugh, it’s a disease. Look it up. It’s where emotions make me eat and not hunger itself. At least that’s my issues, I’m an emotional eater. Towards the end of the year, I picked up this documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” and I wanted to break my emotional ties with food and have it serve as a source of energy vs. a source of comfort. I juiced for 60 days, got back into my old workout regime (slowly) and retrained myself on healthy eating habits.

I’ve also joined a facebook page Feel Free Foundation run by Sunita Bhogal Pattani. Where other over-eaters and those who suffer from other eating disorders can find a sense of community and support. Every week I go to my local Over Eater Anonymous meeting.

The good news for Robert (the man in this video) is that filmmaker Joe Cross (Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead) has reached out to Robert. I’m not saying juicing is the “be all and end all” solution, it has helped me to get on the right path — believe me this PATH is a life long journey to healthy living. We all have to find our own path because our bodies are all different.

You just have to remember if you are battling this disease like me, you’re not alone. Please feel free to reach out to Sunita at the Feel Free Foundation.

It’s been over two years since Rana passed away. I’ve been an avid participant in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Last year I dedicated my fundraising in Rana’s memory. It made such a big impact, I feel Urban Desi Radio can be used as a platform to bring awareness to suicide prevention within the South Asian community. The goal is to raise 1,000 dollars. Do you have dreams of becoming a dholi?

My first UK paycheck, I knew what I want – A DHOL! I quickly rushed to Jas Music in Southall, I proudly went up to the clerk and said I want a dhol. He gave me a good price, threw in a free bag and I was on my way. I picked up a flyer and went to a community center for classes. It was a disaster, needless to say, I can’t play the dhol. In fact the teacher made me go to the back and practice a simple composition. I also got it – but failed. To add insult to injury, I was the only woman in the class and some of the blokes mumbled “moti gori” (fat white girl) under their breath. That hurt. I could of snapped back “benchod” but I have more class than that. I never went back. I lost about 75 quid. I still have my dhol, it proudly hangs in my room. I feel like a poser, but maybe I will pick it up again. The problem is there’s NO dhol classes here in the Bay Area.

Recently Dhol Lessons Online has come up with an interesting concept. For 50 quid a year (79 dollars a year) you get unlimited access to their tutorial videos and access to their member area. That’s cheaper than most private dhol lessons. You can learn from the comfort of your own home and the customer service is fabulous. If you are shy in front of people or have no sense of rhythm like me – this is a steal of a deal!

Rock n Dhol folks.

Petz is a wannabe dholi who has no rhythm, but she can whip up chana masala with her eyes closed. That has to count for something right?

The American Nightmare…

I was shocked to see this appear on my FB timeline. It’s a painful that we don’t have health care in this country, we have sick care. The dark side of this care is the bill the patient gets stuck with aka an uninsured American. This bill is for just being in the hospital for 5 days. I got a chest infection in the UK, was kept there eight days and they sent me off with an extra dose of my asthma medicine. How much did I have to pay? Nothing. While I was bored to tears by the fifth day; I couldn’t help but be grateful I wasn’t going to get stuck with an astronomical bill like this one. The taxes in the UK are outrageous, but at least I know I will be taken care if I got sick. The NHS (UK Healthcare) is far from perfect — however —I would rather be treated under NHS than here in America.

Petz is a dual US and UK citizen, she’s currently going through Nandos withdrawls (pita and hummus platters) — please send your nandos cards to urbandesiradio[@]gmail.com so she can raid Nandos the next time she’s in the UK.

Hor Pila De Promo (Diary of a Butterfly)

We reported Brit-Asian superstar Taz was named musical director for the upcoming film “Diary of a Butterfly”  starring Udita Goswami & Rati Adnihotr. Here’s a snip of Hor Pila De. Taz made a smart move when he decided to crossover to Bollywood. Although we know he gets homesick (missing his beans on toast) the amount of time and energy he’s invested in this film will be unveiled March 2nd. No doubt this is only the first in a series of musical director roles for Taz. Bollywood is surely blessed.

Sonia Panesar’s track “Baadal” (Clouds) has been chosen to compete in Battle of the Bands on The World Music Network. The track takes you into a journey of darkness through the clouds and featured on the track is India’s House phenomenon Hamza. Sonia is perfect example how an Asian artist can easily transition to other genres, without being signed to major labels. It’s all about taking risks, being passionate and having an open mind to eclectic beats. Keep voting for Sonia and Hamza on The World Music Network.

Whitney Houston: A triple threat talent…

I’m still in shell-shock over Whitney Houston’s death, I saw the breaking news story come up on my fb timeline. I googled it and all the articles confirmed the worst – Whitney Houston, Dead at 48.  Growing up in the 80s, there were two stars I always looked forward to seeing on the TV and they were Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Their songs were truly iconic during that tremulous decade. Whitney had this caliber talent to carry a tune, to the point where most of us would of gone breathless – she could still harmoniously sync to the beat.

I’ll remember Whitney as a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act. As I mention on my facebook, if you are remotely BLESSED with one of those talents it can take you far – but if you have all three – there’s NO LIMITS to your potential. However the demons Whitney faced, like so many of our talented superstars were drugs. She coined the term on the 2002 Diane Sawyer interview “crack is whack” that open a can of worms for comedians to poke fun at her. Right now there’s silence, no one is laughing – all we hear is her amazing vocals coming out of our speakers, TVs, computers and smart phones.

People are suspecting the cause of death had to do with drugs, we won’t know until the coroner report comes out. In my opinion, I think her heart just gave out on her. Dr. Drew talked about addict recovery on CNN, if he had been treating Whitney, he would of advised her to take two years off. In 2010, Whitney told Oprah she was clean, I think she just bit off more than she could chew and it killed her. For those of us who have dealt with drugs issues, whether its our own or family/friends, the rule is take one day at a time. Sometimes planning ahead can lead to one’s demise.

I’ll miss Whitney. But like all great artists, her legacy will live through her music and talent. Be sure to watch the Grammys tonight, Jennifer Hudson will pay special tribute to Whitney Houston.
