Jaya name that tune as you please…

UK AMA newcomer nominee Jaya, made Wiley her “tune of the day” little did she know, she had no idea what had transpired between Wiley and Jay Sean. Or Wiley’s comments regarding, slapping someone with their dad’s turban. It seems like every one is on pins and needles, today Bobby Friction had Wiley on his show. Friction stated he’s not a race defender, he’s simply a journalist and is giving Wiley a platform to speak out.

I was kind of turned off by the fact some people tweeted they were “not” going to vote for Jaya, that Jaya is a disgrace. Come on now, that’s going beyond the point of what this is really coming down to. The question is , how do we pass this like gas? According to Jay Sean, in our interview, it seems like he wants to put it behind him. Wiley and him had exchange some private messages and apparently it seems squashed.

I’m not siding with the turban comments, the blog I wrote, I believed that was out of line. Just like it makes my skin crawl when I see a Desi use the N word. Two wrongs don’t make a right, maybe we need to take a look at our own prejudices… whether it has to do with race, sexual orientation, religion and values. I’m sure Jaya got a BIG WAKE UP call when her twitter suddenly got flooded with fans bashing her. She issued these following statements…

Jaya tweeted….I wud like to take this opportunity to apologise for my recent tweet.I was completely unaware about what was going on between Wiley and Jay. On that note I would like to remind you all that I do not condone racism of any sort. Completely disgusted by wileys remarks & behavior. Never woulda made him tune of the day if i had known.

It was a simple misunderstanding Jaya, don’t worry, your true fans won’t hold it against you.

“Hit the lights” hits itunes tomorrow, Jay’s camp predicts this tune will be bigger then Down, only time will tell. 2011 has been kind to Jay Sean, he’s was on Nick Cannon’s “My P.O.V” (documentary TV program) which followed him all the way to his concert with Enrique Iglesias, at Madison Square Garden. UK Disney has him lined up to be a mentor to a youth who wants to break into the music industry and he’s gearing to release his new album “Freeze Time” later this year. We touched on Wiley’s comments against Jay Sean, but Jay seems like he wants to put the whole fiasco behind him. Should his fans follow his lead or has the issue gone far beyond Jay vs. Wiley? If you want my opinion, I have a feeling Rishi Rich and Timbaland will be the ones producing a new Desi tune for Jay.

Petz: Down sold 5 million copies, in your opinion what does “Hit the Lights” have that will make it surpass Down’s success?

Jay Sean: I’m not really looking at the amount of copies, chart positions and stuff like that for success.  I’m looking at it as a song that connects to my fans and the people. When I do my performances, when I sing a song at a concert, I realize what’s successful by the audience reactions. That’s how I know it’s made an impact. With “Hit The Lights” it’s a club record, it’s going to get hammered and battered in the clubs. That’s why I feel it will probably be heard more then Down.

Petz: Has Lil Wayne picked up on any of your British slang?

Jay Sean: I think so. I tried to teach Birdman some of the slang, Birdman ends up laughing at me because he finds it so hilarious. I think half the time I don’t know what they are saying with their New Orleans accent. Nicki (Minaj) has been picking up some lingo.

Petz: If Prince William and Kate were to invite you to sing at their wedding, which song from Freeze Time would you dedicate to them and why?

Jay Sean: Break Your Back (laughs) because that’s the perfect way to consummate their marriage!

Petz: Rishi Rich broke the news that he’s joining Timbaland’s production company, you have mention in the past you would love to add a Desi undertone to one of your track if it made sense. Could Timbaland and Rishi be the ones to produce a Desi undertone track for your new wave of fans and your long time fans to enjoy?

Jay Sean: Definitely! Rishi is amazing when it comes to doing that stuff. Rishi does it better than anyone I know, he understands Indian music, he’s crazy with the club bangers and Timbaland too. So with those two getting together, it’s going to be nuts!

Petz: I have to admit, the first version of 2012 I heard was the chipmunk version. It sounded awful, are you finding it to be difficult to keep your tracks under wrap here in the states?

Jay Sean: It’s not about being in the states; the problem is that it’s impossible to stop a leak. It takes only one person in this world, just one out of six billion, to have your song on the internet for the world to hear. That one person could be anybody, it could be the person delivering the CD to mix studio, or one of the engineers takes it home to show his friends, it could be anything! It can be when it goes to the plant to get pressed up and people just take it home. It’s just going to leak, there’s no way you can stop it.

Petz: With the UK AMAs coming up, do you think it’s fair to have up and coming artists go against you?

Jay Sean: What do you mean? Fair for who?

Petz: I’m just saying to put you in a category with Mumzy for example; do you think that’s fair? You have kind of out grown the AMAs.

Jay Sean: I look at it like this, I’m still so honored, and I’m very flattered that the Asian scene holds me up in that regard. They don’t treat me as if I’m acting like I’m bigger than them, the scene or anyone. They embrace me, the same way they embrace the Asian scene. I’m an artist who has had success, but I also come from an Asian origin. Is it fair to put Skepta up against Jay Z at the MOBO awards (Music of Black Origin) in England? They are put in the same category sometimes, I’m still flattered they would want to nominate me for awards and don’t think I’ve gotten too big for my boots.

Petz: If you were one of the youngsters participating in Disney UK’s “Aim High XD” which artist, not including yourself, right here, right now would you like to have as a mentor?

Jay Sean: Oh wow. That’s a very good question. I think Justin Timberlake. He has been around for such a long time, he’s seen every thing and nothing fazes him. He was a part of the Disney channel himself; he’s just grown up with it. There’s no experience, no event or no venue that he hasn’t encountered; he can give you advice on anything. I think the fact he sings, dances, acts and writes his own songs he’s very very very talented.

Petz: Do you think racism played a part in Wiley’s comments on Twitter on Friday?

Jay Sean: I’m not going to get into the Wiley thing. It was so ridiculous, it was so silly, so pathetic on so many levels that I ignored it. I wish my fans, I love them so much and it came out how much my fans love me, support me and they wanted to defend me. I love them for that, but I had to urge them to stop. It’s not worth it, you should always look pass these things, look above and beyond this kind of stuff.  It could only bring you up or down, if we participate and engage in it.

Petz: Do you wish Wiley took it up through Direct Message, would that have been better?

Jay Sean: Yes. Of course! Which is how we ended up dealing with it. At the end of the day, this is what the problem is with twitter and all the other social networks – it’s too public. Every thing is public and I’m an old schooler, I don’t mean in regards to age, I believe in certain things being precious to humanity, I believe in privacy, I believe in keeping some things close to your heart. I believe in having a conversation without worrying about being tape by somebody sitting next to you on their mobile phones. It’s a major invasion of privacy at times, I don’t think should be used like that.

Petz: Can you give us the inside scoop of what “My P.O.V” with Nick Cannon is all about?

Jay Sean: That’s basically a real fun project, I took part in where Nick and Nickelodeon followed me around for a few days, leading up to my performance at Madison Square Garden with Enrique Iglesias. I had my own flip cam, to film myself. It’s really meant to be real deep and insightful documentary – through my eyes. What you are watching on TV is being ME – what I see.

Petz: In the past, some of your  most successful singles have been one-syllable words, you have Maybe, Stay and of course Down – do you have another one-syllable title track in the making?

Jay Sean: I never thought about that. I do have quite a few one-syllable songs on my new album. Let’s hope they are just as successful!

I was only given seven minutes to do the interview, I had a few more questions to kind of wrap it up. But next time for sure!

I can’t believe it! Finally Desi Comedy comes out with an animated series, it’s about time. I remember every once in awhile I would tell Darsh (Founder of DesiComedy.com) that he needed to create an animated series (of course I was also hinted I wanted to be one of the voice actors) but I guess that will all happen in time. I’m really happy and excited for DesiComedy.com taking on this venture. Enjoy the cartoon!

Indian Express Editor shows his homophobic side

Some people need to understand how saying “that’s gay” hurts a community, a community just like any other community. I was surprised when Sam Rao posted on his facebook “Superbowl – The Doritos Adv is gay. Literally this guy sucks on others fingers and then rips the other guys pants off. WTF? What demographics are they going for. Sorry doesn’t work.” this is the same Sam Rao, who told me at the Fremont Mela 2008 how much he supports the LGBT South Asians, how it’s important for them to have a presence in the community. Sam, whether you like it or not, your comments did hurt the community. It gives a green light to let others know it’s ok to gay bash.

After I told him to refrain from using the word gay in a negative context and how it shows his ignorant side. He responded…

“Get off your horse, what makes this usage negative? IMO the majority demographic has been missed – like if it was a totally Euro (White) man oriented ad. If you are happy and gay and you know it – keep it to yourself”

Whoa there cowboy… “If you are happy and gay and you know it – keep it to yourself” that’s 180 contrast to what you said how you are supportive of the community, now you want people who are gay and happy to keep it to themselves. That’s not going to help anything,  section 377 was abolished – people who are comfortable should be out. It gives people who aren’t ready to come out, a source of courage and a reminder it’s ok to be gay and to be who you are. That’s why ever time I see “gay” used in a negative context on someone status, I ask them to please refrain from using that. Even my friend Rohan, from the Late Night Lounge, came to the realization that it’s NOT ok to say the word Fag in any way, shape or form. When we were watching the football game, every time he said fag, he would pay me two dollars.

I admit, Sam deleted the post, so I can’t quote myself but I said something along the lines that he needs to take the journalism award he won a couple of months ago out of his ass. His integrity is lacking and ignorance is showing. I should of kept my cool, but that last bit really set me off. When he switched off and started talking in Hindi, I started talking in Punjabi by saying … Tere kol koi tameez nahi haighee, Tu koi leader ni haiga, tere honkhar neh tenu paagal kita haigha. Tere kol koi dil nahi haigha, tere andkar koi insaani yat nahi haighee. Ek Jaanwar toh vi thaley haigha ah tu. (you are ignorant, you aren’t a community leader you are a heartless goat) after that exchange he ended up deleting me and blocking me. Likewise I blocked him. He once told me that even though I don’t notice, the community knows I’m out and gay. And that’s why people have a problem with me. But I’m beginning to think it’s not the community that has issues with me, it’s Sam Rao. Which is sad, I used to look up to him when I was a teenager, but after this, I don’t know the Sam Rao I used to know.

Petz UK AMAs Picks…

I don’t believe in Award Shows, I think we should just celebrate the music as is and let it speak for itself. I tell artist that a trophy isn’t your acclaim to fame, the only thing it attracts is dustmites. Just like my opinion won’t matter too much. I’m simply competing with the other founder of Urban Desi Radio, most of you in twitter world know her as Miss Banga (Mandeep Banga). If I’m wrong with my prediction, she gets to hit me in the face with a pie, if she’s wrong, I get to hit her in the face with a pie, if we are both wrong we both get to hit each other with a pie. I prefer berry pie, nom nom nom.

Mumzy Stranger – Journey Begins
Panjabi MC – The Raj
PBN – Crowd Pleaser
Sukshinder Shinda – Jadoo

Petz Pick: PMC The Raj – believe me though each of these albums there was something I liked, The Raj is NOT my favorite PMC album, Indian Timing rocked my world.

Picture 32

BEST NEWCOMER
Foji
Gary Sandhu
Jaya
Jernade Miah
Rumer

Petz Pick: Foji – he just came out of nowhere, he produced some pretty good videos for someone just starting out. When I was doing a show on AM radio in the states, people wanted to hear Dafa Hoja. It could be a tie too between Foji and Garry. Dil De De always gets stuck in my head!

Picture 33

BEST PRODUCER
Aman Hayer
Panjabi MC
PBN
Rishi Rich
Sukshinder Shinda

Petz Pick: Rishi Rich – He’s done some amazing work with Mumzy and Veronica, now he’s off to start a new chapter in his life with Timbaland’s camp, I think this will be his last AMA, we will be hearing more about him in the mainstream. I still believe he will stay true to his roots tho…

Picture 35

BEST RADIO SHOW
Bobby Friction –‘Friction’
Neev – Kiss 100
Nihal – On BBC Asian Network
Nikki Neru – Buzz Asia
Noreen Khan – on BBC Asian Network

Petz Pick: Bobby Fiction – With the threat of the Asian Network closing, he’s been inspiring us all to continue to fight and keep it open. The points he made on that channel 4 special sent chills down my spine. I love his spirit and his passion for music. I’m happy to see Buzz Asia on the list, a few of my old c0-workers from AFX are now presenting on Buzz, so if Bobby doesn’t get the AMA, I hope Nikki gets it.

Picture 38

BEST FEMALE ACT
Hard Kaur
Jaya
Kazz Kumar
MIA
Preeya Kalidas

Petz Pick: Kazz Kumar – Two Words – Dirty Word haha. Kazz has worked hard this past year, I have a feeling 2011 will be her year.

Picture 39

BEST MALE ACT
Jay Sean
Jaz Dhami
Juggy D
Mumzy Stranger
Sukshinder Shinda

Petz Pick: Mumzy Stranger – I got my first dose of Mumzy from Taz’s album Rewind Selecka, I feel in love with his voice. You guys probably think I’m crazy for not picking Jay Sean, no disrespect to Jay, I just think it’s not fair to put him in a category. He’s had his AMA time, let the others have their time to shine.

Picture 41

BEST ALTERNATIVE ACT
BoTown
Karen David
Nasha
Navin Kundra
Rumer

Petz Pick: Navin Kundra – Jee Li ripped through the top 10 charts over the UK, this section always seems to be my favorite section. If it was up to me, all the artists would get an award.

Picture 42

BEST CLUB DJ
DJ Ams
DJ H
DJ Kayper
DJ Vix
Jags Klimax

Petz Pick: DJ Kayper – I’m still working up a sweat to her 2080s remix tape at the gym, its a great time killer too.

Picture 43

BEST INTERNATIONAL ACT
Gunjan
Harbhajan Mann
Master Saleem
Miss Pooja
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Petz Pick: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan – he had a lot of sold out concerts here in the states last year. I’ll admit I’m a sucker for qawwalis too. I know the popular choice is Miss Pooja, we all know she gets featured on 90% of the bhangra tracks out there.

Picture 45

BEST DESI ACT
Jaz Dhami
Jazzy B
Juggy D
Shin DCS
Sukshinder Shinda

Petz Pick: Juggy D – I had a tough time picking someone, I really liked Sukhshinder’s new album. I like Jaz Dhami as well, but I think he needs to push himself to start his new album, although a friend told me he’s really trying to push his brother, which is sweet, but I want to hear more of him. I think Juggy is on a pressure cooker, just ready to explode with his upcoming album.

Picture 39

BEST URBAN ACT
Jay Sean
Menis
MIA
Mumzy Stranger
Raghav

Petz Pick: Mumzy Stranger – I think MIA and Jay Sean have outgrown the AMAs, especially MIA. Menis, Raghav and Mumzy are the true contenders of this category, it’s ashame the two who had the second highest votes behind MIA and Jay Sean won’t get a chance to compete.

Picture 48

BEST VIDEO
Jay Sean ft. Nicki Minaj – 2012
Juggy D – Panjabi Rockstar
MIA – XXXO
Mumzy Stranger – Fly With Me
PBN ft. H Dhami – Gerah

Petz Pick: Gerah – I still think putting these videos against MIA and Jay Sean isn’t fair at all,  I know Jay Sean will probably win it, but I think Punjabi By Nature and H Dhami did a decent job. I was expecting something a little more unique from Juggy D, so I was slightly disappointed by his music video

Picture 72

BEST INTERNATIONAL ALBUM

DJ Sanj – American Desi
Gunjan – Echos
Harbhajan Mann – Vaari
Master Saleem – Jind Mai
Miss Pooja – Janjaban

Petz Pick: American Desi – It was on the SimplyBhangra charts for a long time, I loved the Milna Zaroori track feat. Taz. While others felt this album was watered down, I enjoyed it.

Leave the turban out of this…

It happens, one artist go against another artist, whether what they say is true or not, we can’t come to the conclusion unless we have both the facts. I do think Jay Sean and Wiley should of took this up on DM, but what’s done is done. However Wiley claims he’s not a racist, it’s hard to believe that when he tweets…

@ErumLvzJaySean yes u dickhead now what i will slap of ya dads turbin

Seriously, go on dissing Jay Sean and his fans, but when it comes to the South Asian culture and the religions, it’s best not to tread in those waters Wiley. Once you put it out there in the social media world, it’s done. Comments like this — it may not happen now but it will come back to bite you in the ass. I’m following your lead, the Jay Sean remarks is old news, start tweeting about your music Wiley. Give your new followers something to listen to.

The Beef Goes On…

Picture 27Picture 28

If you were at work, on a plane, train or just bored, the hot Twitter topic (not really…) was the beef between Jay Sean and Wiley. Some call it jealousy on Wiley’s part. I call it stupidity on both sides, although Jay Sean has a lot more on the line where he didn’t let it drag on, but squashed it. It could of been handled through DM, Jay could of ignored it and Wiley could of gone back producing his beats (although he claims he can tweet and record at the same time) Brilliant! If you could remember a world before social network phenomenon, artists would take jabs at each other either at a club or on a MTV special. It was actually folks in the media to blow it out proportion, now with Twitter, you can leave it to the fans to let it go on for days. At least it didn’t end up as a trend topic, if it did, I would seriously have to question the IQ of the users on twitter. The lesson for any artist reading this, whether you are with Jay or Wiley, the one thing you should remember if you got beef with someone you don’t need to broadcast it on twitter… try dropping the person a text or email.

Wiley Says…

@jaysean someone said to me ask Jay Sean to bring me and I said Jay Sean ain’t gonna care he is busy bro that was all
“@jaysean what’s goin on tho everything bless
jaysean exactly you don’t care so why act like you do for 5 seconds
@jaysean why did you ask me the question answer that
Uk people who blow up in the USA I’m happy for them why ain’t they happy for the uk tho ya see that rich an switch lol
Big up Jay Sean but don’t get Leary tho Jay

Jay Sean Says…

I am confused brutha. I put YOU on my rmx for DOWN???! RT @WileyArtist: @jaysean exactly you don’t care so why act like you do for 5 seconds
@WileyArtist And i worked with Skepta…AND BBK!!! Ive always had shown love for u and the grime scene..Chip, Tinie,I’ve worked wit all of u

My Peeps don’t get sucked into negativity,it’s all good.We hold our heads high and move upwards towards achieving greatness.Pay it no mind.

The Desi Diva already has her title set in motion, she will be Rishi’s songwriter as he embarks on his next musical chapter with Timbaland’s camp. I’ve already joked if the songs turn out to be like Permission, I’m in a shitload of trouble (because the song will never get out of my head). As Rishi mentioned, it’s her turn to shine, I think that’s great she will be joining him along on the Journey. She’s more than just eye candy… I can’t wait to see what the two of them produce.

You Got Mail: Aaja – Navin Kundra

Picture 19

It seems like a lot of Urban Desi artists will be releasing singles on Valentines Day, Navin Kundra is no exception. It was such a treat to hear from him, just in time to put Aaja (will be on itunes Feb 14th) in our You Got Mail segment, on the Junction. A couple of years ago, Navin spent several weeks without getting any sleep, he had his fans email him personal dedications, then he recorded those personal dedications and sent them back to the fans. At the time, Tere Liye became a staple track for lovers out there. I found that to be very sweet that he took the time to do that for his fans. If you loved Tere Liye, you are going to dig Aaje.  I love seeing artists evolve and not become one hit wonders. Whatever fame he’s made along the way, it doesn’t seem like its gone to his head, check out Navin’s Aaja kicking of the Junction’s You Got Mail segment.

Rishi Rich joins Timbaland’s Management Camp

It’s funny, a couple of weeks ago I was smoking hookah and having a cup of cinnamon tea with Moiz at Mela Tandoori Kitchen, we started to talk about Rishi being in NYC and settling in the states. We both agreed something big was about to blow over, it was just a question of when. With Jay Sean being tied in with Cash Money, it seem like Rishi would be next to be tied somewhere in the mainstream spectrum. And guess what just happen?

He tweeted a few minutes ago…

“I’m Proud 2 say ive joined da same management as Timbaland &Jim Beanz, which is Mike Daddy of Sunset entertainment/Timberland Productions”

Timbaland and Rishi… a very interesting combo. In ’03, Timbaland was working with up and coming artist Raje Shwari. I was told he went into a Jackson Heights CD store and  bought over 10,000 dollars worth of  Desi music (lucky store owner huh?).  Now with Rishi on Timbaland’s team – will we be hearing a Desi undertone in mainstream tracks? Most likely. We haven’t heard a Desi Undertone in Jay Sean’s tracks since he signed to Cash Money, but whose to say it will never happen? Timing is everything. Congratulations to Rishi, whether you produce something with a Desi undertone or not, it will surely be heard… we will be waiting.
